I like your quote, reminiscent of Jung who said, "Where your fear is, there is your task." Both are a call to embrace and integrate our shadow into our conscious selves.
So beautifully true.... art should not scratch the surface of thought but pull the viewer into and encourage critical thinking of what they are viewing. That with the mix of emotion the art evokes is enriching for the viewer.... and the beauty of that is it varies person to person.
Any work of art, good or bad, regardless of which school of thinking it belongs, should be explaining, by the viewer. Of course,
under his/her personal experience, character, etc. Otherwise, we talk about apathy, insufficient fantasy, in a few words psychopathology. The explanation of any art's work is inevitable and in certain cases compulsory. A very distinctive instance are the pictures which have been showed in the people, in psychometrics, so as to diagnose the IQ, the personality, the imagination and so on. The main issue in the explanation and appreciation of art is Subjectivity. This is the determinative factor.
Thank you, dear cousin, for sharing both your wisdom and the beauty that surrounds us if only we choose to look...Happy New Year to you and yours...xxx Lois
